In a small community in Northern Germany, life is almost feudal, most of the villagers work on the estate of the Baron.
Other leaders of the community are the minister, a man of rigid views, and a doctor a widower everyone knows is having an affair with the midwife.
A series of bizarre incidents occur that inexplicably assume the characteristics of a punishment ritual.
